The Key
Posted at Saturday, December 02, 2006
We finally have the keys to our home! Well, actually we could have gotten the keys earlier - but we were too nice to the sellers. Turns out that the sellers (at least the wife) were really a**holes and made me totally regret being considerate to them.

Just some background, when we initially agreed to the purchase of the flat, the sellers had agreed to reduce the selling price by 2K in return for allowing them to stay for one month after the transaction date. This was because they needed to purchase a new flat and renovate, carry out the shifting etc. We had plenty of time so we certainly agreed to that.

After our HDB first appointment, the sellers then requested to stay for an additional month, claiming that the renovation at their new place was likely to take longer than expected. After some exchanges back and forth, we finally agreed to let them stay for an additional two weeks, i.e. till the end of November and not a day more. In the end, the HDB transaction was completed almost two weeks earlier than expected. So in effect, the sellers had the luxury of staying almost one month for free! Ah well, it still wasn't a big issue to me then - I wasn't losing an arm and a leg and I was helping someone else out afterall. No harm done.

But their true colours were revealed later when I eventually wanted to bring our ID, Darren, to view the flat. I arranged the appointment a week earlier with the husband and it was all good. On the day itself, the seller's wife had the gall to call me up and request for me to delay further viewing of their flat till after they moved out - giving excuses like their dogs couldn't tolerate strangers, they had a dinner to attend that evening etc. That totally pissed me off - we had agreed right from the start that I could bring IDs to view the flat anytime. I called up my agent to request him to sort out the issue and it was then that I learnt from him that the wife was also making some unreasonable requests towards the sellers of the flat which they were purchasing. Fortunately, our ID Darren was good and he didn't need to view it a second time.

As the end of the November approached, our agent called us up on the 28th to let us know that the sellers would be shifting out the next day and they could hand the agent the keys after 11pm. So the next day, I rang up my agent after 10pm to check if the sellers were done moving. The agent then checked with the sellers and it turns out that they were still moving and they didn't expect to finish before midnight! Our agent was more than a little upset (so was I, of course) and so he went down to the house to watch them move. In the end, the fella had to stay till 2am and in the midst of it, ended up arguing with the wife again.

Oh well, at least that's the end of it. We never have to hear from them again. :) We now have the keys and we're scheduled to start the renovation next week! However, our ID had some personal issues to attend to this week and so we're still wondering if we can proceed as planned. We'll find out soon I guess.

Anyway, the Sitex show is on right now and my friend Daniel had gone down on the first day to hunt around for a LCD TV. He was looking for a Sharp model but I had mentioned to him about the JVC model (LTZ37EX6) which I was eyeing, so he kept an eye out for JVC models as well. In the end, he found a better JVC model which was selling at a fantastic discount. This model (LT-Z37DX5) was slightly older but the specifications were solid and better than the one I wanted - hence the original listed price was also much higher than the one I wanted. At the show, they were selling both models at the same price - it was a no-brainer on which model to choose. In the end, we both purchased the same model - but I'll just have to wait two more months before I can enjoy the wide view. :)

Oh, we're also getting a good deal for our ROM venue. At first, Cheri's mother had already referred us to one of the owners of the Jumbo restaurant chain - she had met them while on holiday in Vietnam. Cheri contacted him and he instructed the restaurant owner to give us a good deal. Then two weeks back, my mum told me that my uncle had also spoken to another owner of the chain - I've no idea if this might be the same person - but in any case, he secured a discount as well as some complimentary items for us. I guess Cheri and I should really count ourselves lucky :)
